The parking congestion in the capital city is likely to ease slightly with the construction of a multi storied parking building.
The Thimphu City Corporation is currently working on the design of the building.
Scheduled for completion towards the end of 2013, this will be the first parking building to be constructed in the country. It will be able to accommodate over 400 cars.
The building will be constructed on a one and half acre land near the Zangdopelri building. Once it is complete, people will not be allowed to park their vehicles along the Norzin Lam.
Kinlay Dorjee, the Thrompon (Mayor), assured the businessmen who have shops along the Norzim Lam that this will not affect their business.
“I am definite that business will not be affected. In fact, business should be better.”
To ease traffic congestion, the Thimphu City Corporation also plans to increase the parking fees in the future.
“Today, the parking fee is only Nu. five for 15 minutes. That is too little. We will definitely be increase the parking fee.”
The construction of the seven storied parking building will cost an estimated Nu.100 million.
