Amid the concern of the new COVID variant, Omicron, nearly 300 Bhutanese are set to leave for Australia this month. EducationPro Ticketing Services confirmed that 252 visa holders will leave for Sydney on 19th December on two chartered flights while some 42 visa holders will leave on 17th December.

Australia was due to open its border to vaccinated visa holders beginning yesterday. But the country has deferred the plan for at least another two weeks amid fears of the new COVID variant. There are now six known cases of the Omicron variant in Australia.

Australia closed its border to foreign visa holders in March last year in response to the coronavirus outbreak.
