The incessant rainfall over the past few days wreaked havoc in the country, mostly affecting the paddy growers. In Punakha, a preliminary report suggests that close to 600 families have been affected with over 350 metric tonnes of rice destroyed. This is equivalent to about 35 truckloads. Upon Royal Command, Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering visited the affected farmers today.
The Prime Minister met with the affected farmers in the district and expressed His Majesty’s concerns.
According to Lyonchhen, His Majesty’s Secretariat is collaborating with the district administration to carry out the assessment.
“They are in the process of assessing the damage. His Majesty The King has ordered to inform you that you will be compensated 100 per cent through the Royal Kidu Programme,” the Prime Minister said.
Filled with joy over the Royal concern, people expressed their utmost gratitude to His Majesty for the continuous support. They said that the compensation is the least they expect right now.
One of the farmers, Rinzin, said that they are extremely happy to hear the good news. However, he said that while it was a bit intense this time, such a disaster is quite natural and normal to them.
“There isn’t anything His Majesty The King and the government haven’t done during such needful times,” he said.
The farmers said that His Majesty has been granting lots of soleras and kidus to people that they cannot ask for anymore.
“His Majesty is very concerned about us, thinking that we might go hungry. We can’t find words to express our gratitude,” said Kinley Wangmo, another farmer.
They said that they don’t want to burden His Majesty any further and that they are already happy and content with whatever His Majesty has granted them so far.
The assessment of the damage is underway. It is expected that the extent of the damage will increase.
The Prime Minister will be meeting with the affected farmers of Wangdue Phodrang tomorrow to convey the message of His Majesty The King as well.
