The millet advantage: Lhop’s staple diet a climate smart solution

For time immemorial, the aboriginal inhabitants of southern Bhutan, the Lhops or Doyaps, have depended on millet as a staple diet. Millets are as sturdy as the Lhops themselves. Moreover, the small-seeded grass can grow in dry zones and on land, with low soil fertility and moisture. And with climate change leading to loss of soil fertility and increasing the frequency of droughts, millets may just be the climate-smart food for the future.
