Amid the gloom and uncertainty brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, four unemployed youth of Durungri in Pema Gatshel have taken up vegetable farming. The youth decided to give a try in farming after seeing devastating socio-economic consequences caused by the pandemic.

They have revived a private fallow land on lease. And for now, they are focusing on chilli cultivation. The group started the farming project last year with Nu 350,000 from the CSI bank.

“We have been staying idle after dropping out of school. The COVID-19 pandemic has been an eye-opener and has forced us to re-examine everything.  With border gates closed and a ban on imports, it has created a vegetable shortage. And this encouraged us to start our project”, said Sonam Gyeltshen, one of the youth.

With the ministry of agriculture and forests secretary’s visit recently, the boys are further motivated to work harder.

“When high officials make such a visit, we feel really encouraged. It is also an opportunity for us to share our problems. And we also get an opportunity to seek support immediately,” added Sonam Gyeltshen.

The group is also thinking of establishing a poultry and jersey farm. But without a land of their own, realizing this dream looks hazy.

“As we are using private land on lease, if we happen to construct a permanent structure on private land it would be a problem for us as well as the owner. So it would be really beneficial if we could lease a government land,” added Sonam Gyelthsen.

Meanwhile, the Dzongkhag Agriculture Officer has asked the group to submit an application to the dzongkhag for leasing the state land.
