The number of new cases of COVID-19 reported globally dropped for the third week in a row, last week. This is according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). The WHO said that the falling rate of global Coronavirus cases has been encouraging news but warned governments and individuals to keep their guard up as new variants spread.
The WHO Director-General at a press conference said that there are still many countries with increasing numbers of cases although there has been a drop in the COVID-19 cases globally.
He said that the global trend in cases shows the virus can be controlled “even with the new variants in circulation.” The countries need to be careful and not to let down their guard only for the virus to come roaring back, he added.
More than 100 M of confirmed cases has been reported across the world, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Infections are down in the U.S, Spain, the U.K, Mexico and India. But new cases are increasing in France, Brazil, Indonesia and Italy.
While vaccines still provide protection against the variants, studies have shown that the efficacy rate is diminished, prompting companies to study possible booster shots.
Meanwhile, the WHO team investigating the origins of the coronavirus pandemic visited two disease control centres on Monday that had an early hand in managing the outbreak in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.
