A motorable bridge under construction over the Jangko-rongchhu is expected to end the woes of the people living in the gewogs of Serzhong, Taryathang and Umling in Sarpang. The stream which remains completely dry in the winter turns into a menacing river in the summer fed by the continuous rainfall.

The stream flows through the road that leads to Gelegphu and beyond. And it is a common scene in the monsoon with people stranded on one side or vehicles stuck in the middle. Fed by the monsoon rains, Jangko- rongchhu wreaks havoc. People say it’s risky for their children to go to school in summer.

“When the water level increases, our children come back and we inform the teachers and avail leave from the school. We cannot make it to Gelegphu for shopping too due to the swollen river,” said Tshering Dema, from Tashiphu, under Serzhong Gewog in Sarpang.

However, they are now looking forward to the bridge to materialise.

“It will immensely benefit everyone including the public and students and while going to the hospital. We cannot visit the hospital during the summer even when we are sick,” said Sangay Lhamo, also from Tashiphu.

The construction of the Bailey bridge, which started about nine months ago, is expected to be complete by March, just before the monsoon sets in.

The department of roads is executing the job worth Nu 4.6 M.
