The Lhuentse District Court sentenced two men in their twenties to a prison term of over five years for illicit trafficking of controlled substances in October this year. The court passed the judgment on Tuesday.

A 28-year-old man from Tsakaling Gewog in Monggar was sentenced to five years and three months in prison. He was arrested from Wangdue Phodrang last month for possession of 53 sticks of hashish.

And a 20-year-old man from Lumang Gewog in Trashigang was sentenced to a prison term of five years and two months. He was arrested from Autsho in Lhuentse last month for possession of 50 sticks of hashish.

The convicts were found guilty of violating section 133 and 134 of the Narcotic Drugs Psychotropic Substances and Substance Abuse Act of Bhutan 2015.

They can appeal to the higher court within ten days of the judgment.
