A 16-member Framers Group, Thuenpa Puenzhi Sonam Detshen, in Drukjeygang Gewog under Dagana Dzongkhag came forward to contribute their vegetable produce to the government. Their contribution will help the government in feeding people in quarantine centres.

The vegetables reached Thimphu today.

Members of the group are busy collecting their vegetables based on their scale of production. This time, the group is contributing cabbages and cauliflowers. The recent report of positive COVID-19 cases in the country gave a call for them to help the government.

Tshering Tashi, the Chairman of the Thuenpa Puenzhi Sonam Detshen in Drukjeygang said the group used to sell the vegetables to Drukjeygang School, but after the closure of the school, they decided to help the government meet the need. “Actually, in such a difficult situation with limited vegetable supply, it is a good opportunity for us to make income. But we decided to help the government instead of generating income,” he said.

Members of the group said they are praying for the disease to subside, and they also assure an additional vegetable supply if COVID-19 continues to be a threat to the country. Today, there are over 3000 people in the quarantine centres across the country.

Thinley Wangchuk, the Secretary of the group said they have some more cabbage and cauliflower which will be contributed to the government. And with the potato season coming up, he said the group will support the government. “If COVID-19 problem remains the same, we are ready to support the government. It would be difficult to cover all people but we are contributing just to supplement the government,” he added.

Meanwhile, Drongsep Yargay Detshen, also a Farmers Group at Dangraybu Toed (Bichgaon ka) under Doonglagang in Tsirang collected their mixed vegetables to contribute to the government. The contribution, which comes to around a tonne, will be delivered to Thimphu tomorrow.
