The Parliament of Bhutan has been awarded a certificate of recognition by the UN Interagency Task Force on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) for its outstanding contribution towards achieving the NCDs related Sustainable Development Goals.
The United Nations Interagency Task Force (UNIATF) on NCDs coordinates the activities of relevant UN organizations and other intergovernmental organizations to support governments to meet high-level commitments to respond to NCD epidemics worldwide.
The commitments to combat NCDs were made by Heads of State and Government in the 2011 Political Declaration on NCDs, and implementation is through the World Health Organisation (WHO) Global NCD Action Plan 2013–2020. The Task Force was established by the UN Secretary-General in June 2013 and placed under WHO’s leadership.
In a press release from the Ministry of Health, the ministry acknowledges and appreciates the overwhelming support of both houses of the Parliament, in a congratulatory letter applauded their commitment and initiatives and urged them to continue the momentum. The letter stated that strong leadership is a key element of a good national response to NCDs and Bhutan is fortunate to have a highly proactive Parliament and Parliamentarians leading the national fight against NCDs.
The Ministry of Health also appreciates the instrumental role of the WHO Country Office and the South East Asia Regional Office in providing the required support to Bhutan in this achievement.
