The farmers of Samdrupchhoeling Dungkhag in Samdrup Jongkhar say there is a need for an additional vegetable shed to sell their farm produce. At present, the only market shed in the dungkhag can accommodate about six vegetable vendors.

And with lack of space in the shed, farmers sell their farm produce from temporary sheds and open areas. About 30 farmers from the four gewogs come to sell their farm produce in the market every Saturday in the Dungkhag.

“We have to sell vegetables in the open area, with increasing farmers coming here to sell vegetables, there is a need for additional vegetable shed,” Tashi, a vegetable vendor, said.

“Without vegetable shed, it is inconvenient to sell vegetables from temporary sheds and open areas. We would be grateful if the government could construct additional vegetable sheds to accommodate more vendors. With half of the space in the current vegetable shed occupied by the Food Corporation of Bhutan, only a few vendors can be accommodated here,” Sherab Gyeltshen, another vegetable vendor, said.

Farmers might have to wait for a year or two, as the dungkhag says there is a plan to construct a vegetable shed in the second year of the current plan.
