Five Bhutanese coaches of the Bhutan Olympic Committee will be travelling to Japan in November to attend the first international training on four Para-sport disciplines. The programme is offered through the Agitos Foundation, the development arm of the International Paralympic Committee.
The group will be attending a three-day course on Para-taekwondo, Para-Judo, Para-archery and Para-Power lifting.
The Bhutan Paralympic Committee has been grappling with lack of technical expertise and trained coaches since its establishment in 2017. So, such training, according to the committee, will go a long way in the development of para-sports in the country. With the required expertise at hand, the committee believes in drawing more physically challenged persons into sports. It will also play a significant role in preparing Bhutan for the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan.
Today, besides taekwondo, judo, archery and powerlifting, there are eight other applicable para-sports in Bhutan.
The Bhutan Paralympic Committee officially became a member of the International Paralympic Committee in 2017.
