The government accuses opposition of playing divisive politics.

In the recent war of press conferences, The government hits back at the Opposition for making politics more divisive and creating regionalism. This was shared by the foreign minister while responding to the Opposition Party’s unsatisfactory statements on Pay Revision Bill and the cabinet’s decision of removing Zhemgang from Tourism Flagship Programme.

The Foreign Minister Dr Tandi Dorji said the Opposition Party keeps the party’s interest above everything which is very unfortunate. He added such precedents have made people lose faith in the institution of democracy.

“Their experience is of politicising every issue and especially more so in dividing the people. I would like to request the Opposition that they should change their mindset and come to where we are now to unite the people. Let us not divide people on political grounds. They have already politicised past on the regional grounds and now they are doing further with the people of Zhemgang. This is very sad and for me, this is of serious concern,” said the Foreign Minister.

He added the Opposition Party survived by fuelling the sentiments of the people without which the party will not get support from voters. The Prime Minister’s official Facebook Page requested the Opposition Party to change their mindset and refrain from such divisive and dividing politics in the interest of the Tsa-wa-sum.

“They said that our party set the worst precedent but from our side, the worst precedent has been set by this particular party. The worst has gone. The people of Bhutan did not give them the opportunity to come back as a government because the sense of fighting between two parties has been set by this very party. They have already divided the East and now they have reached to centre, Zhemgang,” he added.

However, the Opposition Party says, they have been playing their roles in line with the Constitution. The Party’s spokesperson, Member of Parliament for Panbang, said they question the government only when the government fails to comply with the Constitution and when there is no equity and justice and balanced regional development for its people.

“If the government does a good job, it is our duty to support them. During the past two sessions, many laws, policies have passed and we supported them but they forgot about that. We oppose the government as and when the government comes up with policies which do not benefit the country and its people. In such cases, we oppose the government and we will continue to oppose,” Dorji Wangdi, the party spokesperson said.

He added that his party will keep on opposing and remind the government for the benefit of the country and its people if the actions of the government are against the country and not in the interest of the people.
