After having settled thousands of cases in the two-storey traditional house at Namgayling for years, Haa Dzongkhag finally gets a new court building.

The Chief Justice of Bhutan attended the consecration ceremony of Haa Dzongkhag Court recently.

The new court building has a blend of both modern and traditional architecture with two Benches. However, with just about 150 cases registered in a year, the court will function with just one Judge.

“If we have more than 300 registered cases in a year, we provide an additional bench. We have to look at the record for about three to four years. In case of Haa, looking at the number and type of cases, we don’t the need to open the other bench for another 5 years or more, “Tshering Dorji, the Registrar General of the Supreme Court, said.

The new court is spacious and has separate detention and restrooms for male, female and children. The court was constructed at a cost of around Nu 45 M.

“The old court is about 60 years old and the building is very old with congested space. It was initially constructed for residence,” the Registrar General Tshering Dorji said.

The existence of court in Haa dates back to the early 1960s. Elders share that the first court was in Wangchuk Lo Dzong headed by Ramjam who also served as the head of dzongkhag. It was later in the late 1970s or early 80s after the court was shifted to Namgayling, Haa had a separate Thrimpoen.
