National Library houses one of the largest Buddhist texts

The National Library and Archives of Bhutan has one of the largest treasures of Vajrayana Buddhist literature in the world. It contains over 12,600 volumes of Buddhist literatures texts with over 200,000 subtitles.These Buddhist literature texts are further divided into different sects

The ground floor of the library contains modern book forms, the first floor houses the Geylug scripts, the second floor has the Nyingma texts and the third floor contains the Kagyud scripts.

The collections were made from different parts of the country.Dr. Younten Dargye, Chief Research Officer said that they had collected all the texts available in the country for preservation purpose and also from other parts of the world like India and Tibet.

The Library has all the modern facilities for preservation.“We also have collections of different subjects like psychology, philosophy, history encyclopedias, subject related to humanities and more.” He added that these were brought through three processes- donation, exchange and purchase.

The Library also offers a number of services and research facilities. It accommodates a large and steadily growing collection of manuscripts, books, scriptures and written documents.The collection of such text began since the 1980s.

The Library was established in 1967.
