Bhutan to have national futsal team by 2019

Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) is planning to form a national futsal team by 2019.

Since there is no national futsal team, the national football team players played two international futsal matches so far.  However, futsal, a team comprising of five players, is very different from normal football play. Bhutan Football Federation therefore has been organising futsal tournament annually to select the best players.

Futsal coordinator underlined that futsal requires more stamina and skills compared to the normal football play, due to small field and less players.

“We have a huge plan to revive the current status of futsal in Bhutan. In the past we selected the best players from matches played for international tournaments,” said the futsal coordinator, Sherab Jatsho. “Now we organise this tournament every year to select the best and then they will be given thorough trainings to make Bhutanese futsal team strong.”

He also said that in the past, futsal enthusiasts were generally elders but as of now, most are youth. The third annual futsal tournament began on Monday with eight teams participating in the tournament. In yesterday’s match, PYFC defeated Thimphu Palace FC by four goals.
