Bus Information System for city bus users

Henceforth, passengers availing themselves of the city bus service need not have to worry about the arrival timings of the buses in their respective locations.

A system called ‘Bus Information System,’ first of its kind in Bhutan can now provide bus information about its routes and travel time to passengers. The pilot project on the system was launched in Thimphu by the National Environment Commission and Green Technology Centre of South Korea, today.

The automatic bus information display will help passengers see where their respective buses are on its way. This system can potentially reduce the uncertainty associated with public transport trips and improve the overall level of service. For now, it is installed only at Changjiji on a pilot basis but gradually, it will be available in all routes of Thimphu and other districts.

“Once we have a very good bus system, not just in terms of comfort but also a very information giving kind of a bus, I think more people will travel by bus when they know the bus timing,” said Karma Tshering, one of the officials from National Environment Commission.

A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the Ministry of Science and ICT of Government of Republic of Korea and the National Environment Commission to further strengthen the cooperation, and collaboration in technology and capacity building.
