Norgaygang’s vegetable market shed abuzz with economic activities

The vegetable market shed in Norgaygang Gewog, Samtse, which remained un-utilised for over a year is now bustling with commercial activities.

The Youth Marketing Group (YMG) formed a month ago, with the help of the Gewog Agriculture Extension Agent has occupied the shed to sell vegetables, cereals, and other agricultural products.

The group has about 35 members including university graduates and class 12 pass-outs.

Some of the members said they are excited about their venture and hope to make it big in near future.

“We cannot depend on government to provide us jobs, so we have started our own business. It is better to do something than to stay home doing nothing,” said a member of the YMG, Arun Gurung.

The YMG sells vegetables and crops grown by themselves and villagers residing in far fling places.

“We have started to some vegetables and even collect spinach and vegetales from villagers to sell at the shed. Crops grown within the country is good for health plus it has good impact on the economy,” said Mon Bir Gurung, the Chairperson of Youth Marketing Group.

The Gewog Agriculture Extension Agent said motivating the group to sell vegetables at the shed is for their own economic benefits.

“The initiative is to not let farmers waste their farm produce and to keep youth commercially engaged, which ultimately helps them to earn a living,” said Karma Tenzin, the Gewog Agriculture Extension Agent.

All six chiwogs in Norgaygang Gewog has a Youth Marketing Group each. Some farmers in the gewog are also bringing their farm produce at the shed. Earlier, they travelled some 17 kilometres to Tendruk Gewog to sell their crops. The vegetable market shed was constructed at a cost of Nu 600,000 over a year ago.
