Bajo town businesses fume over road closure

A section of the road in Bajo town in Wangdue Phodrang was completely closed down, while another has been turned into one-way traffic recently, as directed by the dzongkhag administration for the safety of road users.

This has left some business people and residents crying foul. The owners of shops located along the closed road say their business took a hit due to the road closure. “Hardly any customer visits my shop now,” said Sangay Dorji.

Some say the road closure is confusing drivers, which is leading to accidents. A building owner claims  to have witnessed accidents in the area after the road was closed to traffic. “About four to five accidents have happened since the road was closed to traffic,” said Rinzin Wangdi.

Residents say it would be wise to reopen the road and have traffic police monitor the situation.

A team from the Dzongkhag administration visited the site to review the situation yesterday. “We have decided to allow only the entry of vehicles to the town from the particular road,” said Tenzin Wangchuk, the Chairman of the Dzongkhag Tshogde.

“It is risky allow both entry and exit. So, we have identified another place for exit.”

But the new decision backfired with people wanting to keep the road open to traffic as it used to be. The dzongkhag will now revisit their decision to come up with a better solution.
