Opposition labels government’s proposed plan on unemployment as ‘ad hoc’

opposition-labels-governments-proposed-plan-on-unemployment-as-ad-hocDespite some reservations from the opposition party, the National Assembly endorsed the Supplementary Budget Appropriation Bill 2016-17, today.

The government had proposed for an additional budget of over Nu 260 M to address unemployment in the country, earlier this month.

The Opposition labelled the government’s proposed plan an “ad hoc measure”.

They also said the move is an unsustainable initiative and that the jobs created from the budget will be temporary.

Panbang MP, Dorji Wangdi said the proposed program, Overseas Employment Scheme only targets low-end jobs which will ensure only meagre salary for the jobseekers.

“We have to aim for high-end jobs.”

He also said most of the jobseekers under the Overseas Employment Scheme will be sent to India, according to the Finance Committee. “I thought they were to be sent to Qatar, Kuwait and other countries…”

The Speaker however did not invite comments from the ruling members as the voting for the bill was already over.

A majority voted for the bill.

The bill will be forwarded to the National Council for deliberations.
