Dasho Benji compelled to prove his comment: Representative

DashoBenji-CourtCaseDasho Paljor J. Dorji’s Representative says Dasho was compelled to recite facts to establish as to how Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT), during its last five year of governance, has virtually robbed the country blind.

The rebuttal statement was submitted to the Thimphu District Court by Dasho’s Representative, today.

It says even though the comment, “…having robbed the country blind…” posted by Dasho hardly meant anything at that time and, DPT took it literally.

DPT had filed a libel lawsuit against the Special Adviser to the National Environment Commission, Dasho Paljor J. Dorji, popularly known as Dasho Benji, accusing him of posting “defamatory” statement against DPT on Facebook.

The Representative said, during DPT’s rule, the country’s economy suffered severely. He also said there was policy corruption and also usurpation of the Royal Prerogatives, then. Several examples such as Education City Project, Trowa Theatre case and Bhutan lottery case were also brought up in the court.

Another rebuttal put forth was, the government agencies or political parties cannot sue for defamation. The rebuttal statement states, being a young democratic country, it is yet to have laws in place on the issue of whether a political party, be it ruling or opposition, can sue an individual for criticising its governance.
