Schools grapple with food shortageSchools in Lhuentse and Monggar, are grappling with food shortage. The quarterly ration the World Food Programme (WFP) supplies is yet to reach 15 schools, 12 in Lhuentse and 3 in Monggar.

The ration was to arrive in the schools by the end of September.

More than 2,000 students study in these schools.

The schools, under the WFP Feeding Programme, receive ration in four quarters, once in every three months.

In Lhuentse, the school Principals with the Dzongkhag officials are feeding the students by buying food from the nearby shops.

In Monggar, food supply for the students is being adjusted from the government’s stipend.

With the problem now running into its second week, schools Principals and the Dzongkhag Education Officers are working together to solve the problem. They have reported the matter to the nearest regional WFP office in Samdrup Jongkhar, but, have not heard anything yet.

The Officer in Charge of WFP in Thimphu is out of station.

WFP’s assistance to Bhutan dates back to 1974.
