Card system to ease shortage of LPG cylinders

Tshimasham-GasSHortageShortage of LPG cylinders in Tsimasham has been as issue of discussion in every Dzongkhag Tshogdu in Chhukha. But this year’s discussion could bring about a positive change in the scene with the trade officials considering initiating a card system as a solution.

According to Bjagchhog Gup, Gyeltshen, the fuel depot at Tsimasham is out of stock most of the time.

“By the time people reach at the fuel station, the filled cylinders are sold out. It has been reported that the drivers transporting the cylinders give away the filled ones to the people and shopkeepers along the way. We have also seen shopkeepers hoarding and selling filled cylinders.”

He added that while the refilled cylinder from the fuel depot cost Nu. 481, shopkeepers charge about 700.

The Manager of the Tsimasham fuel depot said they have been issuing only one cylinder per person. “It is difficult to monitor because the shopkeepers send different people to fetch cylinders.”ChhukhaDzongkhagTShogdu

The fuel depot at Tsimasham receives 462 filled cylinders every month.

The Chapchha gup who is also the chairman of the Tshogdu, Dorji Penjore, said a system must be put in place to prevent hoarding and illegal market.

“As soon as the new stock arrives, people rush to the gas station and those who get there first get the cylinders.” He said those travelling from far always have to return empty handed.

The Trade officials said even though no one has formally filed complaint with the office; they are working at curbing the issue as soon.

The Department will be implementing the use of commercial gas in hotels strictly and also put in place a card system for refilling the domestic cylinders.
