Double-cropping in Rinchengang

DoubleCropping-RinchengangSituated on a hill, where Punatshagchu River flows below and the ruin of Wangdue Phodrang Dzong dots the backdrop, is Rinchengang village. Just a couple of feet away from the village, rapid development activities are taking place.

A road stretches near the village. Despite the development activities mushrooming near the town, they elude the tiny village rendering it as one of the least developed villages.

The realisation has dawned upon the people living in the village. As means to gain self-sufficiency, Rinchengang village under Thedtsho Gewog in Wangdue Phodrang will focus on double-cropping, henceforth. They have started planting two varieties of paddy, Number 11 and IR-64, starting this spring.

The Gewog Agriculture Officer, Jamphel Lhamo said their aim is to make people of Rinchengang self-sufficient.

People of Rinchengang did carry out double paddy cropping in 1998. But it was discontinued, soon after, as the villagers found double-cropping difficult.

But the interest for double-cropping has rekindled. Also, the favourable climatic condition and plenty of water for irrigation throughout the year are adding to the interest.

This year, Agriculture Machinery Center in Bajo, demonstrated to the people of Rinchengang, how to plant paddy using paddy transplanting machines. The office will provide the machine, free of cost, for the villagers to use this time around. But starting next year, they will have to pay hiring charges.
