His Majesty visits Dhaka’s first Buddhist temple

HM-Dharmarajika Bauddha ViharaHis Majesty the King and the Gyaltsuen visited the Dharmarajika Bauddha Vihara, a Buddhist Monastery in Dhaka to pay homage, yesterday.

Their Majesties were joined by the Bangladeshi Minister of Industries, Dilip Barua, and a Member of Parliament, Saber Hossain Chodhury, from the Dhaka-9 constituency.

His Majesty the King and the Gyaltsuen were received at the monastery (Sangha Nayaka Suddhananda Mahathero) by the Supreme Spiritual leader of the Buddhist community in Bangladesh.

After offering prayers, their Majesties graced a cultural programme called the Chandalika dance.HM-Dharmarajika Bauddha Vihara.

During the visit, His Majesty also laid the foundation stones for a Memorial Pagoda, for the statue of Atisha Dipankara, a 10th Century Buddhist scholar of Bangladesh, and for a statue of the Buddha.

The temple, later, made an offering of the sacred ash relic of Atisha Dipankara to their Majesties.

It is said that Atisha Dipankara had attained nirvana in Lhasa when he was 73 years old. His ash had been brought back to Dhaka, and is the most sacred relic at the monastery.

The Dharmarajika Baudha Vihara is the first Buddhist temple to be built in Dhaka.
