Relocated Phuentshogling students and staff to return to their respective schools

Phuentshogling students and staff relocated at Punakha are all being called back. The education ministry announced this through a notification today. Meanwhile, the parents and students expressed mixed feelings about the decision.

More than 850 students from three schools were relocated to Phuentshothang School in Punakha in August last year. Over 70 teachers and staff accompanied them. They were relocated due to the worsening COVID situation in Phuentshogling.

Now the Education Ministry has said that they will all be recalled to their respective schools in Phuentshogling.

While most parents and students are happy, some feel that continuing the classes at Punakha would be better.

“We were very happy to hear that our children will continue their studies here. We have to bear extra expenses when they are in Punakha,” said Tenzin Tshomo.

“It is convenient for us to have our children with us. But, in terms of their studies, I feel that it is better up there only,” said another parent, Lhasang Tamang.

“We are happy to be relocated to Phuentshogling. It is always convenient to stay with our family. In boarding school, we face challenges. We even miss our parents so much,” said Sangay Wangmo, one of the relocated students.

“It is nice to be back with our parents. Studying at Punakha was good too. We could study with class toppers,” said Sonika Rai. “Here we don’t get to study with our friends much. Moreover, at home, our parents are not educated. So, it is difficult.”

Meanwhile, the Thromde education sector of Phuentshogling has already started its preparations to bring back the students and staff. Schools in Phuentshogling will open for classes VII and VIII from April 4. Meanwhile classes PP to VI will join the school on April 18. The thromde is yet to decide on the joining date for students of classes IX and above.
