Monsoon in time for Kanglung

The heavy rainfall these days created havoc in most part of the country, but for the farmers of some villages in Kanglung, Trashigang, it came as a blessing. it’s the time for paddy transplantation and irrigation water has always been a problem, but this year, timely rain, thas made them a happier lot.

“For us, if there were no rain, the entire crop would have died. The rain these days helped us a lot. Though it created havoc in other places, it eased our work in transplanting paddy,” said Sangay Dorji, from Pangthang, Kanglung, Trashigang.

Irrigation water has been a challenge for some of the farmers in Thra-Gom and Pangthang villages in Kanglung Gewog. People have to wait for their turn to get the water and sometimes, it has been difficult with insufficient water to irrigate the field within a certain period of time. But with heavy downpour these days, despite getting wet, people are happily transplanting the paddy.

“If the rain continues, we will be able to transplant paddy in all the leftover fields. Without rain, we are not able to transplant. So we are planning to finish all the transplantation by day after. It is inconvenient without water. Without rain, it is impossible to channel water to our fields. Like us, the villagers of Pangthang are also left stranded,” Dechen Peldon, from Thra-Gom, Kanglung, said.

According to gewog Officials, this year, the water from the source itself was small and it has been difficult to irrigate. But with the timely rain, except for some households, most of the people are now done with the transplantation work.
