An unusual spotting

It is unusual but true. A four-year-old elephant was spotted at Shougay La, 3,419 metres above sea level. Shougay La is located along the border of Geling and Bongo Gewogs in Chhukha Dzongkhag. This is the first such case to be recorded in the world according to the Wildlife Conservation Division, WCD.

Researchers from the WCD said the elephant managed to survive in the snow covered mountains by feeding on bamboo and moving continuously.

The elephant had stayed for four days on Shougay la before it was spotted by the caretaker of the telecom tower in the area.

The elephant has now moved back to its habitat in Chumchey, which is about 2000 metres above sea level. But the reason why it moved to a higher altitude may still remain unknown.
