MDGAccelerationFramework-youth-unemploymentA validation workshop on Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Acceleration Framework on prevailing youth unemployment was held in the capital, today. The workshop aims to validate bottlenecks, prioritise strategic interventions and reach consensus on the action plan to address youth unemployment in the country.

MDG acceleration framework is an approach and not a development strategy, according to the consultant for the MDG Acceleration Framework, Taimur Khilji.

“So the issue of youth unemployment is acute in urban areas in Bhutan, especially among the urban female youth population.” He said the bottleneck analysis is a process by which they bring various stakeholders to the table. “We look at the intervention, which is potential to be high intervention, in this case to address youth unemployment.”

The Ministry of Labour and Human Resources is looking for strategies and programme to overcome this issue.

MOLHR’s Director, Jamyang Galay, said they have recently started a tailoring program for women. “We are also looking at the hospitality sector, which absorbs more women.”

Jamyang Galay said they are also taking into account the unemployment problems at the university level. “We have started university level internship programmes where they can gain experience and exposure.”

He added that implementing the strategies to solve the unemployment is achievable.

As per the labor force survey report 2012, the male youth unemployment rate is at 7.3percent, and female youth at is 7.2 percent.
