The International Volunteer Day is observed annually on December 5. A special event to mark the day was organised at the clock tower square, Thimphu, by various CSOs and youth groups. The event was coordinated by UN Volunteers and supported by the Australian Volunteers for International Development, and JICA.

At the event, the UN resident representative, Christina Carlson, spoke about volunteerism and development. Bhutanese and international volunteers also shared their experiences.

The International Volunteer Day was identified by the United Nations in 1985 to promote volunteerism worldwide. This year’s theme is “youth volunteerism”, recognising young people as agents of change in their communities.
