To train the veterinarians in reducing the number of stray dogs and control rabies, a month long training is underway in the capital. About 17 veterinarians are attending the training. They are being trained on, ‘Catch Neuter Vaccinate Release,’ (CNVR) method. It includes catching dogs from particular areas, sterilisation, vaccination, treatment for skin infection and then finally releasing the dogs to their particular areas.

The National Coordinator of the National Dog Population Management and Rabies control programme, Dr. Kinley Choden, said the training is being organised to equip the Bhutanese veterinarians in carrying out sterilization campaigns. She said currently most of the campaigns are being carried out by teams from Human Society International (HSI), a US based NGO.

The veterinarians are also being trained to treat the dogs in a humane way. After the training, veterinarians will be carrying out sterilisation campaigns across the country.

As part of the training, they have sterilised more than 100 stray dogs. The training is being organized by the National Dog Population Management and Rabies control program in collaboration with the government and the Human Society International. The HSI and Department of Livestock have been working on controlling rabies and stray dogs, since 2009.
