The Trashi Yangtse district court has sentenced a 28-year-old man to ten years in prison for rape of a 16-year-old girl. The convict is a local leader in one of the gewogs in Trashi Yangtse. The judgment was passed on Tuesday.

According to the judgement, the convict will also have to compensate about Nu 90,000 for causing mental and emotional distress.

The judgement stated that the victim and the convict initially came to know each other through Facebook. And when they met in April last year, the convict had sexual intercourse with the victim.

The mother of the victim reported the case to the police the following month.
