The Summer University Games have returned after a long hiatus. The third edition of the sports event among the colleges under the Royal University of Bhutan is underway at Sherubtse College in Trashigang. More than 180 students from ten different colleges within Bhutan are participating in three games. If selected, they will get a chance to take part in the World University Games scheduled to take place in Germany in July next year.
More than 180 students from ten different colleges have gathered at Sherubtse College for the event.
During the six-day indoor games competition, students will be competing in badminton, table tennis and taekwondo.
The Summer University Games organised by the Bhutan University Sports Federation was started in 2011. It is organised once every two years, however, the pandemic has mainly hampered the organisers in conducting the third edition.
“Through such sports, we get engaged and keep away from using drugs and other bad things, at the same time it helps us to maintain healthy body, not only that, nowadays it is not necessary that you have to get employed to complete your studies, there is scope of leading life through sports,” said Sonam Penjor from Norbuling Rigter College.
“I came to gain a lot of skills and knowledge. Here we have a lot of teams from 10 different colleges, so we can exchange knowledge related to games and also improve our team building and communication skills,” said Yangden from Gedu College of Business Studies.
The Bhutan University Sports Federation’s main objective is to promote and disseminate education through sports.

“As a member of the International University Sports Federation, we participate in their games, which also happen once every two years,and if we find potential athletes in any of these three discipline, we are planning to participate in the World University Games, which is going to happen next year.”
The programme, which started yesterday will conclude on Thursday.
