A two-day selection camp for the senior men’s national cricket team held at the Gelephu International Cricket Ground ended today. The trial camp will select players for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier B, which will be held in Malaysia towards the end of next month.

28 probable players from across the country took part in the two-day trial camp.

According to the Head Coach, Trishane Nonis, the trial camp will select the 14 best players to represent Bhutan in the upcoming tournament.

“We will pick 18 and 14 will be the final. The 18 will go on training until we go for the tournament.”

The head coach says such tournaments are essential for Bhutanese players to ready themselves to secure a place in future ICC Men’s World Cup tournaments.

“This is the World Cup qualifier. If you see the history, Bhutan has not qualified for the next qualifier. This is the first round of qualifiers, then we will have another round of qualifiers then we will go to the world stage of qualifiers. If we qualify then we will enter the main frame of the T20 World Cup.”

According to the head coach, the selected players will train in Gelephu since the climatic condition in Gelephu is similar to Malaysia.

He also added that they have proposed about five warm-up matches either in India or Thailand before leaving for Malaysia. However, the warm-up matches are not confirmed as of yet.

The team plans to leave for Malaysia a week ahead of the tournament to acclimatise to the weather.
