The Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) extended the registration of the postal ballot for the bye-election of Monggar and Nganglam constituencies till May 31. The registration which was supposed to end today was extended in view of the COVID-19 situation in eastern districts.

“The reason for doing that is to reduce the movement of the people. For example, if you are from Pema Gatshel and reside in Trashigang which is in proximity, then you might think that you will be able to cast your vote in person. However, because of the current situation, if you decide not to go, we will provide a postal ballot facility. For that reason, we have extended,” said Phub Dorji, the Head of the Department of Civic and Electoral Training at the ECB.

According to the ECB, some 7,000 voters of Monggar and Nganglam constituencies reside in other Dzongkhags and overseas. There are a total of 18,500 registered voters in the two constituencies and over 3,900 registered for the postal ballot till now.

The bye-election will be held on June 29.
