The outbreak of rabies in Jarithang village of Samtse’s Ugyentse Gewog is under control. No new cases have been reported since the first case was reported last week. Following the detection of the first case, the district’s livestock officials initiated a mass vaccination campaign for about 250 cats and dogs in the gewog. Other animals, which were in close contact with the Jersey cow that died of rabies are said to be in normal condition.
According to officials, these animals will be monitored for 45 days. Likewise, family members, neighbours, and gewog livestock officials who came in contact with the infected cow are also undergoing vaccination protocols. Extensive public awareness and sensitisation campaigns about rabies prevention, transmission, and the appropriate responses were also conducted. Meanwhile, the source of the initial rabies infection has yet to be traced.
