Poor construction quality displeases people in Monggar

People living in of Monggar town are not happy with the quality of construction taking place in their town. The recent blacktopping of a road, construction of a three storied vegetable market shed and a drainage system in the town, are not up to mark, they say.

The road in the main town has already developed cracks and it hasn’t been even a month since the road was blacktopped.  Some parts of the road have also been washed away by the rain.

The Assistant Engineer of Monggar Municipal, Tsegay Wangchuk, said the quality was never compromised. He said there was a proper monitoring to see if the standards were followed.  “Despite our best effort the road was damaged because of continuous rain.” The project cost about Nu. 7.5 million

The proprietor of Phuntsho Rabten Construction, Tashi Tobgay, said continuous rain weakened the stability of the base. Phuntsho Rabten Construction was taking care of the blacktopping. “If we had sunshine about four days after the blacktop, we won’t have had the problem,” said Tashi Tobgay. However, he said, they have an agreement to redo the necessary work.

Similarly, the municipal officials said, they will ask the contractor to redo the drainage system if the construction does not meet the required standard.

Phuntsho Jorden Construction was awarded the contract for constructing the drainage system. The proprietor of Phuntsho Jorden Construction, Rinchen Dorji, said the project was impeded because of many people parking their cars and leaving heavy items at the construction site even as the construction was continuing. “It is difficult to carry out such project when there are so many people in the town,” he said.

Meanwhile, the vegetable market is being repaired. The market shed was constructed early this year. It was constructed at the cost of Nu.5.5 million.
