As party presidents sweep the nation talking to voters ahead of January 9th Poll Day, promises and pledges are aplenty. Meeting the people of the two National Assembly constituencies in Samdrup Jongkhar, yesterday, the People’s Democratic Party President, Tshering Tobgay, pledged to blacktop all gewog and chiwog roads and to set up small fuel depots in every gewog.

Apart from blacktopped roads in gewogs and chiwogs, the PDP president said should they form the next government, every gewog will be provided with a doctor and that salaries of local government officials will be increased.

Tshering Tobgay also promised to allocate sufficient budget and human resources to strengthen local governments. This includes providing pool vehicles for every gewog to enhance their operational efficiency.

Similarly, the president also said that villages will be provided with three-phase electricity lines so that people can operate any machinery.

The PDP president also pledged to transform the Samdrupchhoeling Township by providing facilities equivalent to a Thromde.

Tshering Tobgay said that the Samdrupchhoeling Township will benefit the residents of Phuentshothang, Pemathang, Martshala, and Samrang Gewogs.

Apart from promising to reduce phone call tariffs by 50 per cent, the PDP president also pledged to undertake the Nyera Amari and Jomori hydropower projects in the district.

Similarly, the president vowed to address water-related challenges for both drinking and irrigation purposes.

Kinley Wangchuk, Samdrup Jongkhar
