Sustainable and portable toilet design wins smart toilet innovation contest

Sustainable and portable toilet design won the first-ever smart toilet innovation challenge held at College of Science and Technology (CST) in Phuentshogling.

The design was invented by a group of engineering students. They used local bamboo and designed sustainable and portable toilet with traditional outlook. Representing the winning group, Sonam Gyeltshen described further about their innovation.

“The toilet has inlet and a flush. We can pour water in the inlet or fix it with the source. The water closet is further connected with the tank at the base, which is filter water collection tank. The tank is connected to water closet.”

Team Eco-potty took home the runners-up prize.

“The design of our toilet is simple yet user friendly. It is made out of bamboo,” said Tshering Penjor.

The contest held on May 2 saw top 10 sustainable and portable toilet designs by the engineering students. Most designs have prototype inner dressings such as water closet, flush tanks and filter system among others.

The Executive Director of Bhutan Toilet Organisation, Chablop Passang Tshering said, “We need portable toilets but due to lack of fund, it is difficult to import them. So, we thought the engineering students here would create better designs and that is why the toilet design challenge was held.”

He added since toilet designs are concept-level, they will further work on it.

Nearly 200 students were engaged in the toilet design contest.
