Gasa- catching up with the rest

Until few years ago, Gasa Dzongkhag lacked most of the basic amenities like road, electricity, access to safe drinking water and mobile phone services. Today it boasts of all these facilities. With these basic amenities in place, the living standard of the people of Gasa has gone up in recent years. And now with the construction of the road, life has become much easier for the Gasaps.

“In the past we had to walk three and a half days from Punakha to Gasa carrying loads on our back. Today we don’t have to carry the loads. Talking about development, Gasa has seen huge development. Today we have access to road and safe drinking water,” said Thinley, a resident of Gasa.

The road has also benefited people of far flung Gewog like Laya. “It has benefited us a lot. In the past when we had to walk, by the time we reach home most of our rice and other ration would finish,” remembers Kinley Dorji, a resident of Laya Gewog.

Not just the roads, Gasa also connected to electricity grid. In the past, people had to light their homes using kerosene lamps but today houses are lit with electricity. Gasa is situated at an altitude of about 2,800 metres above sea level.

The Dzongkhag has four geowgs with about 537 households.
