Farmers’ Group in Tsirang doing well

A farmers’ group in Tsirang has exceeded the Dzongkhag’s target of producing 8,000 kilogrammes of chicken in the 10th Five Year Plan. The group has produced more 24,000 kilogrammes of chicken in the last three years.

The group, Gonor Gongphel Tshogpa, rears and supplies only broiler chickens. Broilers are chickens reared specifically for meat. Twenty farmers from Dunglagang Gewog formed the group three years ago.  The group’s chicken production has also increased substantially over the past years.

“We are doing very good business due to the help we received from the Dzongkhag Livestock Sector. We received de-feathering machine, cool box and deep freezer box. So currently we don’t have any problem,” said one of the members of the group.

The group produces around 500 kilogrammes of chicken weekly. Two members supply the chicken weekly on a rotational basis. They earn more than Nu. 6,000 weekly. The group also brings in 500 day old chicks every week.

“The lives of farmers have improved a lot after they started poultry farms. They can now send their children for further studies in other countries, they build better houses and many of them own cars,” said Dorji Dukpa, Dzongkhag Livestock Officer of Tsirang.

The chickens are mostly sold in Thimphu, Wangdue and Punakha Dzongkhags. The group received cool box from the Dzongkhag Livestock Sector to transport chicken. The group, meanwhile, has plans to expand their business in the future.
