BBS TV reception disappoints viewers

Since the launch of the Bhutan Broadcasting Service’s second channel, BBS 2, most people have been complaining about the reception of both the BBS channels. The worst affected are the channel viewers from the remote regions of the country. The BBS launched its second channel to provide full entertainment programmes for the viewers.

However, due to technical drawbacks, the viewers are either able to watch only the new channel or none of the two.

Most of the viewers are disappointed that the first BBS channel is not accessible most of the time.

“Before we had an opportunity to listen and see the country, but within few weeks time, we don’t know what happen we could not get BBS channels,” said Trashi Dorji, Tongzhang Gup in  Trashiyangtse.

Pem Dorji, Khatoe Gup in Gasa said they can only hear the sound but not the visuals.  “We were told that BBS is working for the second channel, now keep aside the second channels we even lost our previous one.”

Complaints are mostly from the remote corners of the country. According to the technical division of the BBS, it is mainly due to lack of proper technical facilities.

The Officiating Chief Engineer, Sherub Tharchen, said up-gradation of transmission from MPEG2 to MPEG4 has caused the problems. “All the people who are watching in the cable and terrestrial transmission will have no problem but those watching in the dish they will have problem,” he said, advising people to buy MPEG4 DVBS2 de-coder so that they can watch both the channels.

Sherub Tharchen said that BBS is working to install transmitters across the country.
