Courtrooms to use ‘Drilbu’ during court proceedings

Henceforth, courtrooms in the country will use Drilbu instead of gavel to signify the beginning, ending and recess or an adjournment of the court proceedings.

Drilbu will also be used to restore order when litigants commit a breach of courtroom rules. In the past, courts in the country used gavel which is a western innovation and has no correlation to Bhutanese traditions or customs.

“The Chief Justice of Supreme Court in implementing the vision of His Majesty in upholding the rule of law in the administration of justice in conducting free, fair and impartial proceedings in the court felt the need of introducing certain practices which are based on our own values, culture and heritage,” said the Judge of Supreme Court, Kuenlay Tshering.

Yesterday, the Drilbus were distributed to all the judges in the country.
