PM emphasises role of educators at Sherig Conference closing

The 19th Sherig Conference, held on the theme- A King‘s Vision, A Country’s Future, A People’s Dream- ended on Saturday. The week-long annual education conference was held at the Sonamthang Central School in Panbang, Zhemgang.

Speaking at the closing, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of educators and their role in grooming and shaping the lives of children.

Lyonchhen said this important role of educators have become even more pronounced now in the face of the country’s declining fertility rate.

The National Statistics Bureau (NSB) projected the fertility rate to fall below 1.8 percent by 2030. This, he said, makes every Bhutanese child more special. Lyonchhen urged the educators to do what they can to add value to their lives and groom them to fulfill the aspirations of Their Majesties.

“You already know that 60 more Central Schools and ECCD Centers in every chiwog are coming up,” the Prime Minister said. “This is dreaming big, which includes implementing Professional Development Progamme, two years in a row, touching each and every teacher. 8,000 teachers are involved. This means we are capable of anything.”

Also, at the closing ceremony, the Prime Minister awarded cash prizes and trophies to the top three winners of the National School Drama competition held in Thimphu earlier this year

The conference brought together over 130 participants, including school principals, District Education Officers, and officials from the education ministry.
