Dappa making, Yangtships’ bread and butter

People of Trashiyangtse are well known for Dappa or wooden bowl making. The art has been passed on from generation to generation. Mostly popular among tourists, the Yangtships begin making Dappa by the end of June and continues till October.

Pelden Dorji, 42, from Tashiyangtse is a keen Dappa maker. A father of four, he has been making Dappa for over two decades now. “This is the main source of income for me and my family. I spent most of my time making Dappa that are ordered from outside” he said.

He starts working as early as five in the morning and stops only at 11pm. His wife gives him a helping hand.

A good quality Dappa can fetch about Nu. 1,500. Apart from Dappa, Pelden also makes wooden plates, cups, soup bowls, wine cups and dinner sets depending on the demand.

With the demand increasing and so is the price, Pelden is happy to make a good living out it.

Like Pelden, there are many Yangtships who make their living out of it.
