Drivers sensitised on traffic safety along Indian highways

Over a hundred Bhutanese truckers and taxi drivers in Phuentshogling were briefed by police officials from Alipurduar, West Bengal on over speeding, traffic signal and necessary documents to carry while driving along the Indian highways.

The briefing, yesterday, by Alipurduar police along with Road Safety and Transport Authority and Royal Bhutan Police was to ensure safety of the commuters along the Indian highways.

Police also distributed pamphlets on traffic rules. The participants said the sensitization workshop was timely.

“Currently, even if we get into accident in the Indian highway, no body helps us,” said a taxi driver Rinzin Chophel. “Through this workshop, we learnt that if we abide by their rules and regulations, they are going to help us.”

Participants say they would further disseminate the information they learnt from the workshop to fellow drivers for their safety and security while driving across the border.

“We hope that the issues while travelling across the border will be solved,” said BB Tamang, a truck driver.

Over 500 Bhutanese vehicles travel along the Indian highways daily and records show that in the past five months alone, some 26 vehicles met with an accident there.
