More than 50 Bhutanese, working for Quality Hyper Market in Qatar, have not received their monthly salary since March, this year. Of the 50, 33 had been sent by the Global Recruitment Overseas Employment Agency.
The workers say living in a foreign country, without getting paid, despite having to work 10 hours a day, is hard.
“Recently, an employee was terminated immediately when he approached the company’s management for not being paid,” said Chencho Tshering one of the workers.
Another worker, Sonam Chophel said they were promised an increment three months after their employment. “It has been 14 months now.”
The hiring agency had also promised them free medical service.
“We get medical expenses up to 100 Qatari Riyal (Nu 1,800) but it is not enough.”
The labour ministry is not aware of the issue. They said they haven’t received any complaints yet.
The ministry says they will investigate only after they receive complaints from the workers.
The ministry had suspended Global Recruitment Overseas Employment Agency more than two months ago.
