Lhamoi Dzingkha Gewog receives reliable drinking water supply

The dream of getting a reliable drinking water supply has finally come true for the residents of Lhamoi Dzingkha Gewog in Dagana. The De-Suung National Service handed over the water project to the gewog yesterday. The new water supply was completed at a cost of Nu 31 M. It will benefit over 3,000 people in the gewog.

Under the project, two intake tanks were built, a reinforced cement concrete tank for sedimentation and water transmission lines among others. The project will supply water to the people of Lhamoi Dzingkha, Kuendrelthang, Loongsilsa and Chongsamling chiwogs.

In recent years, people in the four chiwogs had to draw underground water using pumps for drinking and other purposes. But people say the water was not sufficient.

“Frequent power disruptions made pumping water from the underground very inconvenient,” said Krishna Bdr. Chhetri.

“The water source for the present drinking water supply is very big. We are optimistic every household will get an adequate drinking water supply,” said Purni Bdr. Mukhia.

Since the inception of the first water project in Punakha in 2020, the De-Suups have been undertaking various drinking and irrigation water supply projects across the country. The De-Suung National Water Service Project has successfully executed 26 such water supply projects so far.

“The projects are not about one to two years but they will benefit the people for many years. For instance, this drinking water supply will benefit around 4,000 people of Lhamoi Dzingkha for decades,” said Ugyen Dorji, one of the De-Suups who worked hard to complete the project.

The gewog started facing the drinking water shortage following an increase in population, and water supply disruptions caused by incessant rainfall in summer and elephant nuisances.
