Bridge incomplete even after six years

The construction of a Bridge over Singyechhu along Pasakha-Manitar road in Phuentsholing began towards the end of 2006. The work, including extension periods, was supposed to be complete by last year. But today, six years on, the 140 feet long bridge is still incomplete. Even the construction works have been stalled.

The work was brought to a halt due to financial constraint on the contractor’s part. DANTAK had awarded the project to a contractor from Jammu in India.

The DANTAK officials said about 80 percent of the work is complete.  The support structures of the Bridge and the main body are complete. “The contractor’s case must have been genuine as it would be irrational for anyone to leave a work when almost complete,” they said.

Of the total project worth of Nu.24.9 million, works worth Nu.4.9 million are remaining.

The contractor, however, has been fined for the delay.

To expedite the work, DANTAK officials will soon meet with the contractor to decide the further course of action. They expect the same contractor to resume the work and complete it within end of March next year.
