Scholarship students commence study abroad

Due to the restrictions on international travel and closure of borders amid the pandemic, Bhutanese scholarships have long remained stuck. At times, students and parents were doubtful about the continuity of their studies. However, as the situation improves, the Department of Adult and Higher Education has started sending them to their respective colleges and universities.

On Monday, the 4th of October, a group of nine students is scheduled to leave for Canada. They are among the recent graduates who qualified to study abroad on scholarship.

A few students who qualified for further studies in Malaysia are studying online.

According to Tashi Rabten, one of the scholarship recipients who are studying online, they started online classes in July.

“I can’t say that it is 100% effective but as far as I am concerned, it is going well. We have some difficulties in understanding some languages, but slowly we are coping with it,” he said.

Besides a few of them and some medical students, DAHE says courses for other students haven’t been affected much.

“We had to defer course commencement for medical students in Bangladesh by six months. Otherwise, we have been facilitating admissions for other students in various colleges and universities,” said SherubGyeltshen, the Chief Program Officer of the Scholarship and Student Support Division.

So far, the department has sent over nearly 300 students abroad during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the department sent the first-ever batch of nine students for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to Malaysia and India this year.
